On HoustonChronicle.com: North Shore knocks off Atascocita, advances to state semifinals

The Eagles had just lost a 44-20 decision to North Shore in a Class 6A, Division I quarterfinals playoff game at Pasadena Veterans Memorial Stadium, but Wheeler was proud to be a part of the Eagles for four years along with his senior teammates.

“This is a real hard feeling right now,” Wheeler said. “This group is real special to me and I feel like we were a special Atascocita group and we had something different. All the seniors put their heart and soul into this since the offseason so, it hurts real bad to end the season like that, but I wish all my brothers the best in the future.”

Atascocita ended the season 11-3 and made great strides this season, but the ultimate goal of a state title didn’t happen.

The Eagles had the toughest schedule in the state of Texas according to Dave Campbell’s magazine.

Atascocita went up to Allen to win the battle of the Eagles and handed Allen its first loss in its state-of-the-art stadium and snapped the Allen 122-game home winning streak.

In the locker room after the loss to North Shore, Atascocita coach Craig Stump reminded his team to thank the seniors for all their leadership and accountability.

“I told them I was proud of them, they went through a lot of adversity,” said Stump to his seniors following the game. “A lot of them turned the corner and became great teammates. No one likes to lose, but I told them be proud of what they did.”

The Eagles lost their quarterback in Gavin Session for the season with an injury, but sophomore Zion Brown stepped in and continued moving the Eagles’ offense down the field.

Wide receiver Chase Sowell shined the brightest this season with the Friday night lights turned on for the Eagles.

He left it all on the field in Pasadena and knows that this senior class left a legacy that the underclassmen will build upon and go further.

“It was a grind,” said Sowell on the season. “This is probably one of the best teams I have ever been on. It was a true brotherhood. We pushed each other every day through the grind. We came up short tonight, but I will always love my brothers for what we did this season.”

A lot of underclassmen made an impact this season along with Brown. Defensive back Braylon Conley made big strides, Kyran Lee lined up in the slot, Samu Taumanupepe caused havoc on the defensive line and freshman Tory Blaylock got to experience what it takes to play varsity.

The Eagles will now enter the offseason where no one will see the work in the weight room and outside on the field running.

Stump and his coaching staff will be back to work on Monday.

The future is all in the hands of the underclassmen, who will look to keep the winning tradition alive at Atascocita.

“We will find out and the future will tell that,” said Stump on what the underclassmen learned this season from the seniors. “What I mentioned to them was that they get another one or two years to play and build on this. They have to take advantage of what they learned from this senior class because it was a good class. I told them to hug a senior in the locker room and thank them for this season.”
